Why a startup lab matters
Access to lab infrastructure is often a critical step for research-based startups moving from idea to real-world impact. By creating a lab for startups at Chalmers campus, Chalmers Innovation Foundation strengthens the bridge between research, entrepreneurship and industry – giving early-stage companies better conditions to develop, test and grow their ideas.

Startup lab: Research-based Innovation Lab strengthens innovation capacity in Västra Götaland by establishing a research-based development lab environment at Chalmers campus. The environment is organised as an innovation cluster and targets early-stage research-based companies. It includes chemistry labs, bench labs and electronics labs and is developed in dialogue with academic institutions and actors in the regional innovation system. By bringing together competence, laboratory infrastructure and collaboration models, the project strengthens the utilisation of research. The environment targets early-stage research-based companies linked to academic research environments at and beyond Chalmers, companies from other parts of the innovation system, and other research-based companies in need of development lab facilities. The project is therefore expected to contribute to stronger innovation capacity and create better conditions for sustainable business development in Västra Götaland.

“This is a strategic initiative from Chalmers Innovation Foundation that strengthens and complements our existing operations. Through Stena Center, we have for many years built an environment for startups, entrepreneurs and innovative tech companies at Chalmers campus. With this initiative, we can take the next step and create better conditions for research-based companies that need lab environments to develop their ideas. It is in line with Chalmers’ strategy to continue being a frontrunner in utilisation and to work as a unified group, where research results and innovations can more quickly be turned into value for industry and society”
